Days and Months
| Day | Month |
|---|---|
| hétfő – Monday | január – January |
| kedd – Tuesday | február – February |
| szerda – Wednesday | március – March |
| csütörtök – Thursday | április – April |
| péntek – Friday | május – May |
| szombat – Saturday | június – June |
| vasárnap – Sunday | július–december |
Time: Hány óra van? (What time is it?) — Három óra van. (It is 3.) Fél négy = 3:30 (half TO four!).
Saying 'fél öt' for 4:30 — correct! But learners confuse 'half TO' vs 'half PAST'. Writing months with capital letters — Hungarian uses lowercase (január, not Január).
Common Error Patterns
Confusing fél X as X:30 rather than (X-1):30
Capitalizing Hungarian month names
Ma hétfő van.
Today is Monday.
Van is used for stating the day.
Fél négy van.
It is half past three.
Fél négy literally means 'half four' = 3:30, half TO four.
Március tizedikén születtem.
I was born on March 10th.
Dates use the -án/-én suffix on the ordinal number.
