Quanto costa?

How much does it cost?

Perché studi italiano? Perché è bello.

Why are you studying Italian? Because it's beautiful.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

In italiano le domande si formano in modo semplice: spesso basta cambiare l'intonazione. Non serve invertire soggetto e verbo come in inglese.

Domande sì/no: Stessa struttura dell'affermativa, con intonazione ascendente:

  • Parli italiano. (affermazione) → Parli italiano? (domanda)
  • Maria è a casa.Maria è a casa?

Parole interrogative:

chi?who?Chi è? Chi parla?
che / che cosa / cosa?what?Cosa fai? Che vuoi?
dove?where?Dove abiti? Dov'è?
quando?when?Quando arrivi?
come?how?Come stai? Com'è?
perché?why?/becausePerché studi italiano?
quanto/a/i/e?how much/many?Quanto costa? Quanti anni hai?
quale/quali?which?Quale preferisci?

Nota: Dove e come si abbreviano davanti a è: dov'è, com'è. Perché significa sia 'why' che 'because'.

Trying to invert subject-verb as in English (*Parli tu italiano?). Italian usually keeps normal word order with rising intonation. 🇬🇧 English speakers: Attempt do-support (*Fai parlare italiano?) or subject-verb inversion. Italian questions are much simpler — just raise intonation.

Common Error Patterns

Unnecessarily inverting subject and verb as in English

Italian questions keep normal word order. Just use rising intonation: Parli italiano? (not *Parli tu italiano?).

Using wrong question word or form (e.g., quanto without agreement)

Match question words: chi (who), cosa/che (what), dove (where), quando (when), come (how), perché (why/because), quanto/a/i/e (how much/many).

Dove abiti?

Where do you live?

Dove + verb (normal order). No inversion needed: Dove abiti? (not *Dove abiti tu?)

Quanto costa?

How much does it cost?

Quanto agrees with the noun it refers to: Quanto costa? (sg.), Quanti costano? (pl.).

Perché studi italiano? Perché è bello.

Why are you studying Italian? Because it's beautiful.

Perché means both 'why' and 'because'. Context clarifies: Perché? (question) → Perché... (answer).
