Non parlo tedesco.

I don't speak German.

Non conosco nessuno qui.

I don't know anyone here.

Non bevo mai caffè.

I never drink coffee.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

English speakers avoid double negatives (*Non mangio niente is correct, not wrong). Also, 'non' must go directly before the verb — nothing between them except pronouns. 🇬🇧 English speakers: Resist double negation (English considers it incorrect). In Italian, 'Non ho niente' is standard. Also may place 'non' in wrong position.

Common Error Patterns

Omitting non in negative constructions

Always place non before the verb: Non parlo, Non ho, Non è. Even with niente/nessuno/mai, non is required before the verb.

Avoiding double negation due to English influence

Italian requires double negation: Non ho niente (not *Non ho qualcosa or *Ho niente). Non...niente/nessuno/mai are all standard.

Non parlo tedesco.

I don't speak German.

Simple negation: non + verb. Non parlo (I don't speak).

Non conosco nessuno qui.

I don't know anyone here.

Double negation: non + verb + nessuno. Both non and nessuno are required.

Non bevo mai caffè.

I never drink coffee.

Non...mai = never. Mai goes after the verb: Non bevo mai caffè.
