The accusative case — direct objects
I can form accusative for direct objects with all genders
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Mam kota.
I have a cat.
Widzę dom.
I see the house.
Czytam książkę.
I am reading a book.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Accusative Case
Marks direct objects. Masculine animate = genitive (-a), masculine inanimate/neuter = no change, feminine -a → -ę.
The animate/inanimate masculine split: animate acc. = genitive, inanimate acc. = nominative.
Mam kota.
I have a cat.
Mam kota — kot is masculine ANIMATE, so accusative = genitive form (kot → kota). Inanimate dom would stay as dom.
Widzę dom.
I see the house.
Widzę dom — dom is masculine INANIMATE, so accusative = nominative (no change).
Czytam książkę.
I am reading a book.
Czytam książkę — książka is feminine, so -a changes to -ę in accusative.
