Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

To jest dom.

This is a house.

Studenci się uczą.

The students are studying.

Okna są otwarte.

The windows are open.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Nominative Case

The nominative is the dictionary form, used for subjects and after to jest. Masculine personal plural has stem changes (student → studenci).

Masculine personal plural triggers stem changes (student → studenci). Neuter plural -a looks like feminine singular.

To jest dom.

This is a house.

To jest dom — dom is in nominative (dictionary form) after to jest.

Studenci się uczą.

The students are studying.

Studenci się uczą — masculine personal plural: student → studenci (stem change t→c + -i).

Okna są otwarte.

The windows are open.

Okna są otwarte — neuter plural: okno → okna (ending -a). Don't confuse with feminine singular -a.
