Czas przeszły — Past Tense
Polish past tense is gender-marked — the verb ending tells you the subject's gender, not just person.
| Person | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter |
|---|---|---|---|
| ja | robiłem | robiłam | — |
| ty | robiłeś | robiłaś | — |
| on/ona/ono | robił | robiła | robiło |
| my | robiliśmy | robiłyśmy | — |
| wy | robiliście | robiłyście | — |
| oni/one | robili | robiły | — |
Formation: verb stem + -ł- + gender ending + person ending. The -ł- marker is the hallmark of Polish past tense.
Learners forget gender distinction: a woman says robiłam, not robiłem.
Wczoraj pracowałam.
I worked yesterday. (woman speaking)
Female speaker uses -łam: pracować → pracowałam.
On czytał książkę.
He read a book.
3rd person masculine: czytać → czytał (just -ł, no person ending).
Uczyliśmy się polskiego.
We learned Polish. (mixed group)
Mixed/male group uses -liśmy: uczyć się → uczyliśmy się.
