Conjugation of the verb 'to have' (mieć) in present tense

Mam brata.
I have a brother.
Masz czas?
Do you have time?
Nie mam książki.
I don't have a book.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Verb "to have"
Mieć: mam, masz, ma, mamy, macie, mają. Takes accusative in positive, genitive in negative sentences. Idioms: mieć rację (be right), mieć na imię (be called).
Negation switches from accusative to genitive: mam książkę but nie mam książki.
Mam brata.
I have a brother.
Mam brata — brat (brother) is masculine animate, accusative = genitive: brata.
Masz czas?
Do you have time?
Masz czas? — czas (time) is masculine inanimate, so accusative = nominative (no change).
Nie mam książki.
I don't have a book.
Nie mam książki — after negated mieć, use GENITIVE (książka → książki), not accusative (książkę).
