Pronombres combinados: se lo doy

Putting the indirect and direct pronouns together, and why le becomes se

Learning Goal

Can combine direct and indirect object pronouns in the correct order and position

Exam Skills:Expresión escritaExpresión oral

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

¿Le has dado las llaves al portero? —Sí, se las di ayer.

Have you given the keys to the caretaker? — Yes, I gave them to him yesterday.

El regalo es para tu madre: dáselo el domingo, cuando vengan a comer.

The present is for your mother: give it to her on Sunday, when they come for lunch.

Las fotos de la boda ya están: te las mando esta noche o, si prefieres, voy a enviártelas por correo.

The wedding photos are ready: I'll send them to you tonight, or if you prefer I'll email them to you.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Ya sabes decir Le doy el libro y Lo doy. Ahora toca juntarlos, y hay dos reglas que no fallan nunca.

Regla 1: primero el indirecto, después el directo. Siempre. Nunca al revés.

Frase completaCon pronombres

Practice Exercises
Order errors (*'lo me da') and the missing se (*'le lo doy') are the two classics. A third: forgetting the accent when both pronouns attach to an infinitive — decírselo, not *decirselo. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English says 'I give it to him' — direct first, then a prepositional phrase. Spanish reverses both the order and the form, which is why 'se lo doy' takes a while to become automatic.

¿Le has dado las llaves al portero? —Sí, se las di ayer.

Have you given the keys to the caretaker? — Yes, I gave them to him yesterday.

le + las would be impossible, so le becomes se: se las di. The question uses the full noun, the answer replaces both.

El regalo es para tu madre: dáselo el domingo, cuando vengan a comer.

The present is for your mother: give it to her on Sunday, when they come for lunch.

Attached to an affirmative command, both pronouns join the verb and the accent appears: dáselo.

Las fotos de la boda ya están: te las mando esta noche o, si prefieres, voy a enviártelas por correo.

The wedding photos are ready: I'll send them to you tonight, or if you prefer I'll email them to you.

With a periphrasis both positions are correct: 'te las voy a enviar' and 'voy a enviártelas'. Native speakers use both freely.

What are common mistakes with Pronombres combinados: se lo doy?
Order errors (*'lo me da') and the missing se (*'le lo doy') are the two classics. A third: forgetting the accent when both pronouns attach to an infinitive — decírselo, not *decirselo. 🇷🇺 Russian speakers: Russian word order here is free and marked by case (Я ему это дал / Я это ему дал), so the fixed Spanish order feels arbitrary. It is not negotiable: indirect always first. 🇺🇦 Ukrainian speakers: Same freedom at home, same fixed order to learn here. Also, both languages let you drop the pronoun when context is clear; Spanish generally does not. 🇨🇿 Czech speakers: Czech clitic order is genuinely helpful: 'dal jsem mu to' is dative before accusative, exactly like 'se lo di'.
