Exam Skills:Comprensión de lecturaExpresión escrita

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Se venden pisos reformados en el centro; se alquila también una plaza de garaje.

Refurbished flats for sale in the centre; a parking space is also for rent.

En este pueblo se cena a las diez y no se hace la siesta ni en agosto.

In this village people have dinner at ten and don't take a siesta even in August.

Se bate el huevo, se añade la patata escurrida y se deja cuajar a fuego suave.

Beat the egg, add the drained potato and let it set over a low heat.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Practice Exercises
Agreement is the usual slip: 'se vende pisos' is wrong on any estate agent's window; it must be 'se venden pisos'. And do not add a subject: *'se se come bien' or *'uno se come bien' are not the pattern. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English reaches for the passive ('Spanish is spoken here'), which produces the stiff *'Español es hablado aquí'. Spanish says 'Se habla español'.

Se venden pisos reformados en el centro; se alquila también una plaza de garaje.

Refurbished flats for sale in the centre; a parking space is also for rent.

Plural noun, plural verb (se venden); singular noun, singular verb (se alquila). This is the language of every estate agent's window in Spain.

En este pueblo se cena a las diez y no se hace la siesta ni en agosto.

In this village people have dinner at ten and don't take a siesta even in August.

Impersonal se with no noun after it: the verb stays singular. This is how you describe customs.

Se bate el huevo, se añade la patata escurrida y se deja cuajar a fuego suave.

Beat the egg, add the drained potato and let it set over a low heat.

Recipe register: three impersonal se forms in a row, each agreeing with its own noun.

Both map to Spanish se. The trap is agreement, because Russian -ся verbs also agree — so the intuition is right; apply it. 🇺🇦 Ukrainian speakers: Same two structures (тут добре готують; будинок будується). Transfer works well here.
