Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Bạn thích ăn phở không?

Do you like eating pho?

Bạn khỏe không?

Are you well?

Đi chưa? — Rồi!

Have you gone yet? — Already!

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Có...không? — Yes/No Questions

Vietnamese has two main ways to form yes/no questions:

PatternExampleAnswer
Statement + không?Bạn khỏe không?Khỏe. / Không khỏe.
+ verb + không? thích không?Có. / Không.
Verb + chưa?Ăn chưa?Rồi. / Chưa.

No inversion! Just add không or chưa at the end. The word order stays exactly like a statement.

Answering: Repeat the verb for yes, không + verb for no. Bạn thích không? → Thích! (Yes!) / Không thích. (No.)

Using 'yes/no' instead of repeating the verb. 🇬🇧 English speakers: Answer with *có (yes) / *không (no) for everything. Vietnamese echoes the VERB: Q: Thích không? A: Thích (yes=like) / Không thích (no=don't like). 🇩🇪 German speakers: Same problem: try to use ja/nein equivalents.

Common Error Patterns

Answered with có/không instead of echoing the verb

Vietnamese echoes the verb: Q: Thích không? A: Thích! (like=yes) / Không thích (not like=no). Don't just say có/không.

Bạn có thích ăn phở không?

Do you like eating pho?

Có...không wraps around the verb phrase. Answer: Có, thích! (Yes!) or Không, không thích. (No.)

Bạn khỏe không?

Are you well?

The simplest pattern: statement + không? Bạn khỏe (you well) + không? = Are you well?

Đi chưa? — Rồi!

Have you gone yet? — Already!

chưa questions expect rồi (already/done) or chưa (not yet) answers. Different from không questions!
