The third group of regular verbs ends in -ir. In the present tense it is nearly a copy of the -er group: four of the six forms are identical. The difference shows up only in nosotros and vosotros, where the i of the infinitive comes back.
| Person | -er: comer | -ir: vivir | Different? |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | como | vivo | no |
| tú | comes | vives | no |
| él / ella / usted | come | vive | no |
| nosotros / nosotras | comemos | vivimos | yes |
| vosotros / vosotras | coméis | vivís | yes |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | comen | viven | no |
Everyday -ir verbs: vivir (live), escribir (write), abrir (open), recibir (receive), subir (go up, upload), decidir (decide), compartir (share), discutir (argue, discuss).
Vivimos en Valencia, cerca de la playa de la Malvarrosa. ¿Dónde vivís vosotros? Escribo a mi abuela todas las semanas. La farmacia abre a las nueve y media. Compartimos piso con dos estudiantes.
Note the last one: Spanish students share a flat (compartir piso) far more often than they live in halls, so you will hear this verb a lot.
Because the difference, though small, is real: say *vivemos or *escribéis and a Spaniard hears it straight away. The two groups also part ways in the vosotros command (comed vs vivid), and the infinitive itself tells you which pattern a verb follows, so learn each verb with its infinitive ending. In vosotros, keep the accent: vivís, escribís.
A word of warning for English speakers: discutir can mean "to discuss", but between people it very often means "to argue": Mis vecinos discuten mucho is not a compliment.
