When you call someone or speak to them directly, Czech puts the name or title into a special form, the 5th case (vocative). English has nothing like it: you say "Hi, Tom!" with exactly the name on his passport. A Czech friend called Petr is Petře!, Eva is Evo!, and your teacher is paní učitelko!
| Name or noun | Ending | Vocative |
|---|---|---|
| Most men's names in a hard consonant | -e | Jan → Jane, Pavel → Pavle, pan → pane, profesor → profesore |
| -r after a consonant | -ře | Petr → Petře, bratr → bratře |
| -k, -h, -ch, -g | -u | Marek → Marku, Novák → Nováku, kluk → kluku |
| -ec | -če | otec → otče, chlapec → chlapče |
| Soft consonants (š, ž, j, ...) and some nouns in -l (Daniel, učitel); others in -l take -e, like Pavel | -i | Tomáš → Tomáši, Ondřej → Ondřeji, učitel → učiteli |
| Women's names in -a | -o | Eva → Evo, Jana → Jano, babička → babičko |
| Women's names in -e | no change | Lucie → Lucie, Marie → Marie |
One that amuses English speakers: Jan becomes Jane. Jane, pojď sem! is a man being called over.
Both words change for men: pan Novák becomes pane Nováku, pan doktor becomes pane doktore. For women, paní never changes, and neither do surnames in -ová: paní Nováková stays paní Nováková. Titles do change: paní doktorko, paní profesorko. A formal email opens Vážený pane Nováku, or Vážená paní Nováková, - the adjective vážený keeps its ordinary form; of the nouns, pan and Novák move (pane Nováku), while paní and Nováková stay as they are.
English speakers tend to skip the vocative and say *Dobrý den, pan Novák. Czechs will understand you, but it sounds like reading out a name from a list. In polite situations - a doctor, a teacher, a neighbour you say vy to - the vocative is expected: Dobrý den, pane Nováku!
Among friends you will sometimes hear the plain name, Ahoj, Tomáš!, but the vocative is never wrong, and family words are almost always in it: children shout Mami! and Tati! across every Czech playground.
