The locative (6. pád) is the case of place and of topic: "in Brno", "on the table", "about Petr". It only ever appears after a preposition, mainly v/ve (in), na (on, at) and o (about). English changes nothing after "in"; Czech changes the ending: Brno, but v Brně. Beginners' favourite slip is to leave the noun alone: *v Brno, *na stůl (which means "onto the table").
| Group | Ending | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| masculine things, many everyday words | -ě / -e | v obchodě, na mostě, na stole, v lese, v Londýně |
| masculine things in -k, -h, -g, -ch; many borrowed words | -u | v parku, ve vlaku, na trhu, ve vzduchu, v hotelu |
| masculine soft things (stroj) | -i | v pokoji, v počítači |
| masculine people and animals | -ovi (soft: -i) | o Petrovi, o tátovi, o doktorovi; o muži, o učiteli |
| neuter in -o | -ě / -e, after -k, -h, -ch -u | ve městě, v Brně, v divadle; v Česku, na Slovensku |
| neuter in -e, -í | -i / no change | na moři, na letišti; na náměstí, na nádraží |
This is the honest difficulty of the topic: for masculine and neuter things, two endings compete, and the noun decides. Two reliable guides. Nouns ending in -k, -h, -g, -ch take -u: v parku, na trhu, ve vlaku, and so do countries in -sko, -cko: v Česku, na Slovensku, v Německu. Many newer and borrowed words take -u too: v hotelu, v supermarketu. For the rest, learn the place with its preposition, the way you learn a phrase: v obchodě, na stole. Some nouns accept both, such as v kině or v kinu, na balkoně or na balkonu; for people the same goes for o doktorovi or o doktoru.
Before -e some consonants shift: r → ř (papír → na papíře, jaro → na jaře, in spring), k → c (rok → v roce, in the year). After d, t, n and b, p, v, m the ending is written -ě (after d, t, n it softens the consonant, after b, p, v it sounds like "ye", after m like "nye"): v obchodě, ve městě, v Brně.
V becomes ve before v and f and before many consonant groups: ve vlaku, ve škole; ve městě is a fixed form worth learning as it is. Some places take na instead of v, and English "at" will not tell you which: na nádraží, na náměstí, na letišti, but v divadle, v hotelu. And "at home" is one word, doma; v domě means "in the building".
