Imperativo negativo

Saying don't: no hables, no comáis, no venga — the forms that differ from the affirmative

Learning Goal

Can tell someone not to do something, at both formal and informal register

Exam Skills:Comprensión auditivaExpresión oral

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

No te preocupes, ya llamo yo a la comunidad.

Don't worry, I'll call the residents' association myself.

No hagáis ruido después de las once: los vecinos de abajo se quejan.

Don't make noise after eleven: the neighbours downstairs complain.

No cojas el AVE de las siete, sale más caro; coge el de las nueve.

Don't take the seven o'clock AVE, it's more expensive; take the nine o'clock one.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Aquí hay una trampa que sorprende a todo el mundo: el imperativo negativo no es el afirmativo con un «no» delante. Se dice habla pero no hables; ven pero no vengas.

PersonaAfirmativoNegativo
túhabla / come / venno hables / no comas / no vengas
ustedhable / coma / vengano hable / no coma / no venga
vosotroshablad / comed / venidno habléis / no comáis / no vengáis
ustedeshablen / coman / venganno hablen / no coman / no vengan

Practice Exercises
The number one error is *'no habla' / *'no ven'. Learners negate the affirmative form instead of switching paradigms. Second: pronouns move. Affirmative 'dímelo' becomes negative 'no me lo digas' — the pronouns detach and go in front. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English builds the negative command with 'don't' plus the same verb, so the idea of a whole different set of forms is counter-intuitive and needs drilling, not understanding.

No te preocupes, ya llamo yo a la comunidad.

Don't worry, I'll call the residents' association myself.

Preocuparse → no te preocupes. The reflexive pronoun goes before the verb in the negative, never attached.

No hagáis ruido después de las once: los vecinos de abajo se quejan.

Don't make noise after eleven: the neighbours downstairs complain.

Vosotros negative: hacer → hago → no hagáis. The affirmative would be 'haced', a completely different form.

No cojas el AVE de las siete, sale más caro; coge el de las nueve.

Don't take the seven o'clock AVE, it's more expensive; take the nine o'clock one.

The same verb in both forms in one sentence: no cojas (negative) versus coge (affirmative). Nothing about them looks alike.
