Pretérito perfecto compuesto

Haber + participle: he hablado, and the irregular participles you actually need

Learning Goal

Can talk about life experiences and recent events using the present perfect

Exam Skills:Comprensión auditivaExpresión oral

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

¿Has probado alguna vez los calçots?

Have you ever tried calçots?

This morning I went to the health centre and they gave me an appointment for Thursday.

The lift has broken down again and the residents' association chairman hasn't said anything.

Nunca he estado en Galicia, pero he visto muchas fotos.

I've never been to Galicia, but I've seen a lot of photos.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

haber+ participioEjemplo
he-ar → -ado
-er/-ir → -ido
He desayunado en el bar de abajo.
has¿Has visto las llaves?
haHa llamado tu hermana.
hemosHemos comido demasiado.

Se dice No he comido nada y Nunca he estado en Galicia, jamás *he no comido.

Practice Exercises
The participle never agrees with anything here: 'Hemos comido' — never *comidos. And keep the pair welded together: negation and adverbs go before haber. 🇬🇧 English speakers: The form matches 'I have eaten' beautifully, but the boundaries do not. Spanish says 'Esta mañana he ido al médico' where English happily allows 'I went this morning'.

¿Has probado alguna vez los calçots?

Have you ever tried calçots?

Life experience with no date attached — the clearest use of the perfect. 'Alguna vez' is a reliable trigger.

This morning I went to the health centre and they gave me an appointment for Thursday.

'Esta mañana' is still inside today, so peninsular Spanish uses the perfect twice, even though English uses the simple past.

The lift has broken down again and the residents' association chairman hasn't said anything.

Two irregular participles (roto, dicho) and a present-relevant result: the lift is broken right now.

Nunca he estado en Galicia, pero he visto muchas fotos.

I've never been to Galicia, but I've seen a lot of photos.

Nunca goes before haber, never between haber and the participle. Visto is irregular.
