Beyond the A1 rule: la fiesta es en mi casa, la puerta está abierta, and estar as a change of state

Learning Goal

Can use ser and estar in the harder A2 contexts: events, results and changes of state

Exam Skills:Comprensión de lecturaExpresión oral

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Christmas Eve dinner is at my in-laws' place, and they're in Alicante.

The greengrocer's is closed: it's a local holiday and they don't open until Thursday.

"You're so tanned!" "Well, I've been in Cádiz for two weeks."

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

SerEstar
Mi hermano es muy delgado. (así es él)¡Qué delgado estás! (has adelgazado)

Practice Exercises
'Es abierto' and 'está abierto' are both possible but mean different things — the first describes a personality (open-minded), the second a door. And professions: 'soy profesora' is your career, 'estoy de profesora en un instituto' means you are doing that job for now. 🇬🇧 English speakers: 'The wedding is in Seville' matches ser, which helps — but English 'is' also covers estar, so nothing else transfers.

Christmas Eve dinner is at my in-laws' place, and they're in Alicante.

The event (la cena) takes ser; the people (mis suegros) take estar. Both in one sentence, both about location.

The greengrocer's is closed: it's a local holiday and they don't open until Thursday.

está cerrada = the resulting state (estar + participle, agreeing in gender); es fiesta = an identification.

"You're so tanned!" "Well, I've been in Cádiz for two weeks."

Estar signals a change from how the speaker remembers you. 'Eres morena' would describe your natural colouring instead.
