Wortstellung im Mittelfeld
Inside the verbal bracket: pronouns before nouns, TeKaMoLo for adverbials, definite before indefinite, and how focus bends the rules
I can order pronouns, objects and adverbials in the Mittelfeld and bend the rules for focus.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Ich habe es ihr gestern nach der Probe heimlich zugesteckt.
I slipped it to her secretly yesterday after the rehearsal.
Sie hat dem Chor wegen der Akustik nur ungern den Proberaum überlassen.
She let the choir have the rehearsal room only reluctantly, because of the acoustics.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Ordnung im Mittelfeld:
| Regel | Beispiel |
|---|---|
| Pronomen vor Nomen; Akk-Pron vor Dat-Pron | Ich habe es ihm gestern gegeben. |
| Nomen: Dativ vor Akkusativ | Ich habe dem Kollegen den Plan gezeigt. |
| Angaben: Te-Ka-Mo-Lo | Sie fuhr gestern wegen des Streiks widerwillig nach Bonn. |
| bekannt vor neu | Ich habe der Frau ein Buch gegeben. (neu = spät) |
Faustregeln, keine Gesetze: Fokus zieht ans Ende, Kontrast erlaubt fast alles. Aber es steht IMMER früh: *Ich habe ihm es gegeben klingt schief - es ihm.
- *ihm es → es ihm: accusative pronoun first
- TeKaMoLo scrambled without focus motivation
