This/that — αυτός/εκείνος (decline like adjectives)
Can use demonstratives to point out items
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Αυτό το φαγητό είναι νόστιμο.
This food is delicious.
Εκείνη η κυρία είναι η δασκάλα μου.
That lady is my teacher.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Demonstratives
αυτός (this) / εκείνος (that). Pattern: demonstrative + article + noun: αυτό ΤΟ βιβλίο.
English: 'this book'. Greek: 'this THE book' (αυτό ΤΟ βιβλίο). Always keep the article between demonstrative and noun!
Αυτό το φαγητό είναι νόστιμο.
This food is delicious.
αυτό + ΤΟ + φαγητό. The article is mandatory between demonstrative and noun.
Εκείνη η κυρία είναι η δασκάλα μου.
That lady is my teacher.
εκείνη (that, fem.) + η (article) + κυρία (lady).
