פועל להיות: עבר ועתיד
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
אֶמֶשׁ הָיָה קַר.
Last night it was cold.
מחר אֶהְיֶה בבית.
Tomorrow I will be at home.
הם הָיוּ סטודנטים.
They were students.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
בהווה אין פועל 'להיות'. בעבר ובעתיד חובה להשתמש בו.
עבר: הָיִיתִי, הָיִיתָ, הָיִיתְ, הָיָה, הָיְתָה, הָיִינוּ, הֱיִיתֶם, הֱיִיתֶן, הָיוּ.
עתיד: אֶהְיֶה, תִּהְיֶה, תִּהְיִי, יִהְיֶה, תִּהְיֶה, נִהְיֶה, תִּהְיוּ, יִהְיוּ.
Common Error Patterns
Inserting a present-tense form of להיות (which doesn't exist in modern Hebrew)
Using wrong person/gender form of past or future להיות
אֶמֶשׁ הָיָה קַר.
Last night it was cold.
הָיָה = past 3rd masc. sg. of להיות. Compare present: קַר (no verb needed).
מחר אֶהְיֶה בבית.
Tomorrow I will be at home.
אֶהְיֶה = future 1st sg. of להיות. The א- prefix marks 1st person in future tense.
הם הָיוּ סטודנטים.
They were students.
הָיוּ = past 3rd plural of להיות. Works for both masculine and mixed groups.
