Can express ability, desire and need using יכול, רוצה, צריך with correct gender agreement
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
אני יכול לדבר עברית קצת.
I (m.) can speak Hebrew a little.
היא רוצה לשתות מים.
She wants to drink water.
הילדים צריכים ללכת לישון.
The children need to go to sleep.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
שלושה פעלים מודאליים חשובים מאוד — כולם מסכימים במין ובמספר עם הנושא:
| עברית | English | זכר יחיד | נקבה יחידה | רבים |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| can | יכול | יכול | יכולה | יכולים/יכולות |
| want | רוצה | רוצה | רוצה | רוצים/רוצות |
| need | צריך | צריך | צריכה | צריכים/צריכות |
מבנה: נושא + מודאל + שם הפועל (לְ-)
דוגמאות: אני יכול לדבר עברית (I can speak Hebrew). היא רוצה לאכול (She wants to eat). הם צריכים ללכת (They need to go).
שים לב: רוצה לא משתנה בין זכר לנקבה ביחיד!
Using masculine form יכול for female subject (*היא יכול instead of היא יכולה). Forgetting infinitive לְ- after modal (*אני רוצה אוכל instead of אני רוצה לאכול). Assuming רוצה has separate m/f forms — it doesn't in singular.
Common Error Patterns
Used wrong gender form of modal verb (e.g., היא יכול instead of היא יכולה)
יכול and צריך must match subject gender: f.sg. → יכולה / צריכה. רוצה is the same for m. and f. singular.
Omitted the infinitive לְ- after modal verb (e.g., *אני רוצה אוכל)
Modal verbs always require an infinitive: אני רוצה לאכול, היא יכולה ללכת, הם צריכים לישון.
אני יכול לדבר עברית קצת.
I (m.) can speak Hebrew a little.
יכול (m.sg.) + infinitive לדבר. Female speaker would say יכולה.
היא רוצה לשתות מים.
She wants to drink water.
רוצה stays the same for male and female in singular — no gender change here!
הילדים צריכים ללכת לישון.
The children need to go to sleep.
צריכים = m.pl. form of צריך. Followed by infinitive ללכת (to go).
