Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Holnap fogok tanulni.

I will study tomorrow.

Ők fognak jönni a bulira.

They will come to the party.

Holnap megyek a piacra.

I'm going to the market tomorrow.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Future tense: conjugate fog + infinitive (-ni). fogok/fogsz/fog/fogunk/fogtok/fognak + verb-ni. Alternatively: present tense + future time word (holnap, nemsokára) also expresses the future.

Learners use fog without infinitive, or forget -ni ending. 🇬🇧 English: Like 'will + verb'. fog = will; infinitive adds -ni. 🇩🇪 German: Like 'werden + Infinitiv'. fog = werden.

Common Error Patterns

Uses fog without -ni infinitive (e.g. *fogok megy)

fog always needs the infinitive (-ni form): fogok menni, fogsz tanulni. Never use a conjugated verb after fog.

Wrong fog form for the person (e.g. *fog instead of fogok for 1st sg)

Memorise: fogok, fogsz, fog, fogunk, fogtok, fognak. It conjugates like a regular back-vowel verb.

Holnap fogok tanulni.

I will study tomorrow.

fogok (I will) + tanulni (to study). fog conjugated for 1st sg.

Ők fognak jönni a bulira.

They will come to the party.

fognak (they will) + jönni (to come). 3rd pl fog form.

Holnap megyek a piacra.

I'm going to the market tomorrow.

Present tense + holnap (tomorrow) = future meaning. No fog needed with time word.
