Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Il ragazzo è alto, la ragazza è alta.

The boy is tall, the girl is tall.

L'esame è difficile.

The exam is difficult.

È una bella giornata.

It is a beautiful day.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

In italiano, gli aggettivi devono concordare con il sostantivo in genere e numero. Ci sono due gruppi principali.

Gruppo 1: aggettivi in -o (4 forme)

MaschileFemminile
Singolare-o (alto)-a (alta)
Plurale-i (alti)-e (alte)

Gruppo 2: aggettivi in -e (2 forme)

Maschile = Femminile
Singolare-e (grande)
Plurale-i (grandi)

Posizione: La maggior parte degli aggettivi va dopo il sostantivo: un libro interessante, una casa grande. Alcuni aggettivi molto comuni vanno prima: bello, buono, grande, piccolo, nuovo, vecchio, brutto: una bella giornata, un buon caffè.

Bello prima del nome si comporta come l'articolo: bel ragazzo, bell'uomo, bello studente, bei ragazzi, begli occhi.

Forgetting agreement — adjective must match noun in BOTH gender AND number. Also, adjective position (before/after noun) can change meaning. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English adjectives never change form. Must remember 4 forms for -o adjectives and that -e adjectives have only 2 forms.

Common Error Patterns

Adjective does not agree in gender or number with its noun

Check agreement: -o adj → 4 forms (rosso/rossa/rossi/rosse); -e adj → 2 forms (grande/grandi). Match the noun's gender AND number.

Incorrect adjective placement (before vs after noun)

Most adjectives go AFTER the noun (un libro interessante). Common short adjectives go before: bello, buono, grande, piccolo, nuovo, vecchio.

Il ragazzo è alto, la ragazza è alta.

The boy is tall, the girl is tall.

Alto (-o group): alto (M.sg.) → alta (F.sg.). Full agreement with subject.

L'esame è difficile.

The exam is difficult.

Difficile (-e group): same form for both masc. and fem. singular. Plural: difficili.

È una bella giornata.

It is a beautiful day.

Bello before a feminine noun → bella. Some common adjectives go BEFORE the noun: bella giornata.
