Demonstratives: questo/quello + agreement
Can use questo and quello with correct agreement
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Questo libro è interessante.
This book is interesting.
Quello studente è intelligente.
That student is smart.
Quelle case sono vecchie.
Those houses are old.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
I dimostrativi indicano la vicinanza o la lontananza di qualcosa.
Questo (this) — vicino a chi parla:

Quello (that) — lontano da chi parla. Davanti a un nome si comporta come l'articolo determinativo:

Common Error Patterns
Using wrong form of quello before a noun (ignoring article-like patterns)
Quello before nouns follows article rules: quel (=il), quello (=lo), quell' (=l'), quella (=la), quei (=i), quegli (=gli), quelle (=le).
Demonstrative not agreeing in gender/number with noun
Questo: 4 forms (questo/a/i/e). Quello: 7 forms before nouns, 4 as pronoun (quello/a/i/e).
Questo libro è interessante.
This book is interesting.
Questo + masculine noun = questo libro. Regular 4-form adjective.
Quello studente è intelligente.
That student is smart.
Quello before s+consonant = quello studente (like lo studente).
Quelle case sono vecchie.
Those houses are old.
Quello + feminine plural = quelle case. Feminine plural is always quelle.
