Винительный падеж и одушевлённость
The animacy split: animate accusative = genitive (вижу брата), inanimate = nominative (вижу стол), singular and plural
I can mark direct objects correctly by animacy in both numbers.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Мы пригласили друзей, соседей и даже строгого начальника.
We invited friends, neighbours and even the strict boss.
Кошка видит рыбу, а рыба видит кошку — оба в винительном.
The cat sees the fish, and the fish sees the cat — both accusative.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Винительный падеж раздваивается по одушевлённости:

| мн. число (все роды) | вижу столы, книги | вижу братьев, сестёр, животных |
Женский род ед. числа имеет своё окончание -у/-ю и одушевлённости не различает: вижу сестру, книгу. Правило работает и у прилагательных: вижу нового студента / новый стол.
- *вижу брат → вижу брата
- Plural animacy missed: *вижу сёстры → вижу сестёр
- *вижу новый студент → нового студента
