Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Я чита́ю кни́гу.

I read a book.

Я ви́жу студе́нта.

I see the student.

Я люблю́ му́зыку и спорт.

I love music and sport.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Винительный падеж (4-й) — падеж прямого дополнения. Отвечает: Кого? Что?

Ключевое правило: Одушевлённость важна только для мужского рода! Вижу стол (= им.п.) vs Вижу студе́нта (≠ им.п.).

The animate/inanimate distinction in masculine accusative is the main challenge. 🇬🇧 English: No case change for objects. 'I see the student' = 'I see the table'.

Я чита́ю кни́гу.

I read a book.

Книга (F) → книгу in accusative. -а changes to -у.

Я ви́жу студе́нта.

I see the student.

Animate masculine: студент → студента (add -а). Compare: Я вижу стол (inanimate = no change).

Я люблю́ му́зыку и спорт.

I love music and sport.

Музыка (F) → музыку. Спорт (M inanimate) stays unchanged.
