Negation with -ma/-me for verbs and değil for nouns/adjectives
Can form negative sentences with both verbs and nouns
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Türkçe bilmiyorum.
I don't know Turkish.
Bu güzel değil.
This is not beautiful.
Ben doktor değilim, mühendisim.
I'm not a doctor, I'm an engineer.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Türkçe'de iki temel olumsuzluk yolu vardır:
1. Fiillerde: -ma/-me

Değil kişi eki alır: değilim, değilsin, değil, değiliz, değilsiniz, değiller.
Common Error Patterns
Used değil for verb negation or -ma/-me for nominal negation
Verbs → -ma/-me suffix; Nouns/adjectives → değil
Türkçe bilmiyorum.
I don't know Turkish.
bilmiyorum: -me- negation inside the verb.
Bu güzel değil.
This is not beautiful.
değil: nominal negation (not for verbs!).
Ben doktor değilim, mühendisim.
I'm not a doctor, I'm an engineer.
değilim: değil + person suffix -im.
