"Đang" — Progressive Aspect

đang marks an action happening right now or at a specific moment. It's like English '-ing' but optional.

VietnameseEnglish
Tôi đang ăn.I am eating (right now).
Anh ấy đang ngủ.He is sleeping.
Chúng tôi đang học tiếng Việt.We are studying Vietnamese.

đang is for emphasis: Without đang, Tôi ăn can mean 'I eat' or 'I'm eating'. Adding đang specifically highlights the ongoing nature: 'I'm eating RIGHT NOW.'

đang + thì: 'Was doing when...': Tôi đang ăn thì điện thoại kêu = I was eating when the phone rang.

Overusing đang for every present action. 🇬🇧 English speakers: Use đang for everything since English progressive is so common ('I'm going', 'I'm thinking'). Vietnamese uses bare verb more often. 🇩🇪 German speakers: German has no progressive form, so tend to underuse đang. Good — Vietnamese also uses it less than English!

Common Error Patterns

Used đang unnecessarily

đang is for 'right now' emphasis. For general/habitual present, use bare verb: Tôi ăn cơm (I eat rice, generally).

Tôi đang nấu cơm, đợi một chút.

I'm cooking rice, wait a moment.

đang emphasizes: I'm cooking RIGHT NOW (so wait). Without đang, it would be ambiguous.

Bạn đang làm gì?

What are you doing?

đang + làm gì = doing what right now? Very common everyday question.

Trời đang mưa.

It's raining.

đang + mưa = it's raining (right now). Weather + đang = current conditions.
