Exam Skills:Nghe hiểuNói

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Tôi hiểu rồi!

I understand now! / Got it!

Ăn cơm rồi uống trà.

Eat rice then drink tea.

Tôi đã ăn rồi, cảm ơn.

I've already eaten, thanks.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

"Rồi" — Completion Marker

rồi (already/then) goes at the END of a sentence to mark completion. It means the action is DONE.

VietnameseEnglish
Tôi ăn rồi.I've already eaten.
Anh ấy đi rồi.He's already gone.
Xong rồi!Done! / Finished!

rồi vs đã: đã goes BEFORE the verb (đã ăn). rồi goes AFTER (ăn rồi). Both mark past/completion but from different angles. You can even combine: Tôi đã ăn rồi = I have ALREADY eaten (emphatic).

rồi as 'then': Ăn rồi đi! = Eat then go! Sequential actions.

Practice Exercises
Confusing position of đã (before verb) and rồi (after verb/sentence end). 🇬🇧 English speakers: Put rồi before the verb like 'already' in English. It should come AFTER. 🇩🇪 German speakers: German 'schon' is flexible in position. Vietnamese rồi is always sentence-final.

Common Error Patterns

Put rồi before verb instead of after

rồi goes at sentence END: Tôi ăn rồi. NOT *Tôi rồi ăn. Compare with đã which goes BEFORE: Tôi đã ăn.

Tôi hiểu rồi!

I understand now! / Got it!

rồi marks the change of state: I didn't understand before, but NOW I do. Very common expression!

Ăn cơm rồi uống trà.

Eat rice then drink tea.

rồi = then (sequential). Action 1 rồi Action 2 = do 1, then do 2.

Tôi đã ăn rồi, cảm ơn.

I've already eaten, thanks.

đã (before verb) + rồi (after) = emphatic completion. Double-marking for emphasis: I have DEFINITELY eaten.
