Czas przeszły — Past Tense

Polish past tense is gender-marked — the verb ending tells you the subject's gender, not just person.

PersonMasculineFeminineNeuter
jarobiłemrobiłam
tyrobiłeśrobiłaś
on/ona/onorobiłrobiłarobiło
myrobiliśmyrobiłyśmy
wyrobiliścierobiłyście
oni/onerobilirobiły

Formation: verb stem + -ł- + gender ending + person ending. The -ł- marker is the hallmark of Polish past tense.

Learners forget the gender distinction: a woman must say robiłam, not robiłem. The plural also splits: robili (male or mixed) vs robiły (all-female group). English speakers: English past has no gender — 'I worked' regardless. Must always think about speaker's gender. Russian speakers: Russian past tense is also gendered (делал/делала) — direct transfer. But Russian lacks person endings (я/ты/он делал are identical). Czech speakers: Czech past uses auxiliary (dělal jsem) — Polish fuses person into the verb ending. Gender distinction transfers well.

Wczoraj pracowałam.

I worked yesterday. (woman speaking)

Female speaker uses -łam: pracować → pracowałam.

On czytał książkę.

He read a book.

3rd person masculine: czytać → czytał (just -ł, no person ending).

Uczyliśmy się polskiego.

We learned Polish. (mixed group)

Mixed/male group uses -liśmy: uczyć się → uczyliśmy się.
