Czasownik "być" — The Verb "to be"

The verb być (to be) is irregular and essential. In colloquial speech, present tense forms are often dropped, but beginners should learn them.

PersonSingularPlural
1stja jestemmy jesteśmy
2ndty jesteśwy jesteście
3rdon/ona/ono jestoni/one

Usage: With nouns in instrumental case: Jestem studentem (I am a student). With adjectives in nominative: Jestem zmęczony (I am tired). Negation: nie jestem, nie jesteś, nie jest...

Learners forget that być requires instrumental case with nouns (jestem studentem, not *jestem student). The 3rd plural są looks nothing like the rest of the paradigm. English speakers: Use nominative after być (*jestem student) instead of instrumental (jestem studentem). Omit być entirely when not needed. Russian speakers: Russian drops быть in present tense — must remember to include jestem/jest. Instrumental after быть is familiar (я студентом → jestem studentem). Czech speakers: Czech jsem/jsi/je maps directly. But Czech uses nominative after být (jsem student) — Polish requires instrumental (jestem studentem).

Jestem nauczycielem.

Я вчитель.

Jestem nauczycielem — note instrumental case (nauczyciel → nauczycielem). Not *jestem nauczyciel.

Jesteśmy zmęczeni.

Ми втомлені.

Jesteśmy zmęczeni — adjective stays in nominative (unlike nouns which take instrumental).

Oni nie są tutaj.

Їх тут немає.

Oni nie są tutaj — negation with nie before the verb. Są is the 3rd person plural (irregular).
