Many verbs that are plain verbs in English are reflexive in Romanian: they carry a small pronoun meaning "myself, yourself..." that English does without. "I wake up" is mă trezesc, literally "I wake myself".
| Person | Pronoun | a se numi - to be called |
|---|---|---|
| eu | mă | mă numesc |
| tu | te | te numești |
| el / ea | se | se numește |
| noi | ne | ne numim |
| voi | vă | vă numiți |
| ei / ele | se | se numesc |
Dictionaries list these verbs with se: a se numi. Mă numesc Elena. - My name is Elena (I call myself Elena).
| Romanian | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a se trezi | to wake up | Mă trezesc la șapte. - I wake up at seven. |
| a se îmbrăca | to get dressed | Te îmbraci repede? - Will you get dressed quickly? |
| a se grăbi | to hurry | Ne grăbim! - We're in a hurry! |
| a se uita | to look, to watch | Mă uit la un film. - I'm watching a film. |
| a se gândi | to think (about) | Mă gândesc la tine. - I'm thinking of you. |
| a se simți | to feel | Mă simt bine. - I feel fine. |
| a se întâmpla | to happen | Ce se întâmplă? - What's happening? |
Dropping the pronoun is the usual English-speaker mistake: *Trezesc la șapte sounds as if you wake somebody else up at seven. Sometimes both versions exist with different meanings: Spăl mașina. - I wash the car. Mă spăl. - I wash (myself).
Before the conjugated verb, and after nu: Nu mă grăbesc. - I'm not in a hurry. Before a vowel it shortens and takes a hyphen, which you will see constantly in the past tense: m-am trezit - I woke up, s-a întâmplat - it happened, te-ai îmbrăcat - you got dressed.
In the plural the same pronouns can mean "each other": Ne vedem mâine! - See you tomorrow! (literally "we see each other tomorrow"). And se with a third-person verb makes a general statement, like English "one" or the passive: Aici se vorbește engleză. - English is spoken here. Cum se spune "cheers" în română? - Noroc!
