てもいい (may/is OK to) and てはいけない (must not)
Can ask for and give permission, and express prohibition
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
ここに座ってもいいですか。
May I sit here?
教室で食べてはいけません。
You must not eat in the classroom.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Permission: て form + もいいです = 'may/it's OK to'.
Prohibition: て form + はいけません = 'must not'.
