Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

日本に行きたいです。

I want to go to Japan.

今日は何も食べたくないです。

I don't want to eat anything today.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

〜たい — Want to Do

Replace ます with たい to express 'want to do'. たい conjugates like an い-adjective.

ます formたい formMeaning
食べます食べたいwant to eat
行きます行きたいwant to go
飲みます飲みたいwant to drink

Conjugation: たい→たくない(negative), たかった(past), たくなかった(past neg).

Note: The object can take を or が: 水飲みたい or 水飲みたい (both OK).

Caution: たい is for YOUR desires only. For third person, use たがっている: 彼は行きたがっている。

行きます → 行きたい(want to go) + です(polite)

今日は何も食べたくないです。

I don't want to eat anything today.

食べたい → 食べたくない(negative, like い-adjective: い→くない)
