Я студе́нт.

I am a student.

Ты зна́ешь ру́сский?

Do you know Russian?

Она́ врач, а он учи́тель.

She is a doctor, and he is a teacher.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Личные местоимения указывают на участников речи. Русский язык — pro-drop: местоимения можно опускать, если лицо ясно из контекста.

ЛицоЕд. числоМн. число
1-е лицоя (I)мы (we)
2-е лицо (нефор.)ты (you)вы (you pl. / you formal)
2-е лицо (формал.)Вы (You formal)
3-е лицоон (he/it м.р.)
она́ (she/it ж.р.)
оно́ (it ср.р.)
они́ (they)

Ты vs Вы:

  • Ты — друзья, семья, дети, ровесники
  • Вы (с заглавной) — уважительное обращение к одному человеку (незнакомцы, старшие, официальные ситуации)
  • вы (со строчной) — множественное число (несколько человек)

Он/она/оно: Зависит от грамматического рода существительного: стол → он (м.р.), книга → она (ж.р.), окно → оно (ср.р.).

Learners use он/она based on natural gender rather than grammatical gender of the noun. Also confusing ты/Вы registers. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English 'you' covers both ты and Вы — learners default to one form. Also struggle with оно for inanimate things that are neuter.

Я студе́нт.

I am a student.

Note: no verb 'to be' in Russian present tense! Я студент = I [am] student.

Ты зна́ешь ру́сский?

Do you know Russian?

Ты — informal 'you'. Used with friends, family, children. Compare: Вы зна́ете ру́сский? (formal)

Она́ врач, а он учи́тель.

She is a doctor, and he is a teacher.

Она = she (or any feminine noun). Он = he (or any masculine noun). Again, no 'is' needed!
