Возвратное местоимение «свой»
свой points to the subject: мой/его vs свой, the meaning-changing contrast (любит свою/его жену), and where свой is banned
I can use свой correctly whenever the owner is the subject and avoid it in subjects.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Каждый рассказывал о своей поездке, а Дима — о его... то есть о чужой.
Everyone talked about their own trip — and Dima about somebody else's.
Возьми свои коньки: прокатные опять все разобрали.
Take your own skates: the rental ones are all gone again.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Свой принадлежит подлежащему:

С «я/ты/мы/вы» свой взаимозаменим с мой/твой: Я взял свой/мой зонт (свой — нейтральнее). Запрет: свой не может стоять в подлежащем: *Свой брат пришёл. Идиомы: своя рубашка ближе к телу, в своё время, сам не свой.
