Condicional simple

Would-forms for politeness, advice and wishes: me gustaría, ¿podría?, yo que tú iría

Learning Goal

Can make polite requests, give advice and express wishes using the conditional

Exam Skills:Comprensión auditivaExpresión oral

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Could I have a white coffee and a slice of Spanish omelette?

If I were you, I wouldn't take the car: there's a taxi strike today and everything will be gridlocked.

We'd love to come to the wedding, but that weekend we've got my niece's christening.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Practice Exercises
Every single form carries an accent on the í — hablaría, hablaríamos. And the conditional is not a tense for talking about the past: 'Cuando era joven, iría al gimnasio' is wrong; that is the imperfect (iba). 🇬🇧 English speakers: 'Would' also marks past habits in English ('When I was young I would go to the gym'), and that meaning is the imperfect in Spanish, never the conditional. This is one of the most persistent English errors at A2.

Could I have a white coffee and a slice of Spanish omelette?

The standard polite request at a Spanish bar counter. 'Poder' keeps its future stem: podr-.

If I were you, I wouldn't take the car: there's a taxi strike today and everything will be gridlocked.

'Yo que tú' + conditional is the everyday way to give advice — softer than deberías and much softer than an imperative.

We'd love to come to the wedding, but that weekend we've got my niece's christening.

Encantar behaves like gustar and takes the conditional to soften a refusal — a very Spanish way of saying no.
