Practice Exercises
Learners confuse ser with estar. Remember: ser = permanent/inherent qualities. Also: no article with professions (Soy profesor, not *Soy un profesor). 🇬🇧 English speakers: English has only 'to be', so distinguishing ser/estar is the biggest challenge. English speakers also add articles with professions ('I am a teacher' → *Soy un profesor).

Soy de España.

I am from Spain.

Ser + de expresses origin. 'Yo' is omitted because 'soy' already indicates first person.

Ella es profesora.

She is a teacher.

Ser + profession without article. The feminine form 'profesora' matches the subject 'ella'.

Son las diez de la mañana.

It is ten in the morning.

Ser is used for telling time. Plural 'son' because 'las diez' (ten o'clock) is plural. Only 'es la una' (1:00) is singular.
