Imperativo formal: usted, ustedes y vosotros

Completing the command paradigm beyond tú: siga, pasen, venid, and when Spain actually uses each

Learning Goal

Can give instructions politely to one or several people using formal and plural commands

Exam Skills:Comprensión auditivaExpresión oral

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Carry straight on to the traffic lights and turn right; the on-duty pharmacy is next to the tobacconist's.

Pasen, siéntense y rellenen este impreso mientras esperan.

Come in, sit down and fill in this form while you wait.

Kids, set the table and take the rubbish down before Grandma arrives.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Practice Exercises
The usted form and the vosotros form look nothing alike, and learners tend to master one and dodge the other. Also: 'vosotros' commands are the only ones that use -ad/-ed/-id — never *hablar as a command, even though you hear it in the street ('¡callar!' is non-standard). 🇬🇧 English speakers: English has one command form for everyone, so the four-way split feels like overkill and the tú form gets used with strangers. In a bank or a doctor's surgery in Spain, that is genuinely rude.

Carry straight on to the traffic lights and turn right; the on-duty pharmacy is next to the tobacconist's.

Seguir → sigo → siga: the e>i change of the present carries over into the usted command automatically.

Pasen, siéntense y rellenen este impreso mientras esperan.

Come in, sit down and fill in this form while you wait.

Three ustedes commands in a row: the standard register at any Spanish public counter.

Kids, set the table and take the rubbish down before Grandma arrives.

Vosotros commands: infinitive minus -r plus -d. Poner → poned, bajar → bajad. Heard in every household in Spain.
