Pretérito indefinido: ser/ir
Past tense of ser and ir: fui, fuiste, fue — identical forms for both verbs!
Can use the past tense of ser and ir and distinguish them by context
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Ayer fui al cine.
Yesterday I went to the cinema.
La fiesta fue muy divertida.
The party was very fun.
Fuimos a la playa el domingo.
We went to the beach on Sunday.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Ser e ir tienen formas idénticas en pretérito indefinido:

¿Cómo distinguir? Por el contexto:
- Fui al cine. = I went to the cinema. (ir — movement/destination)
- Fue profesor. = He was a teacher. (ser — identity/profession)
- Fue muy divertido. = It was very fun. (ser — characteristic)
Nota: No llevan tildes (a diferencia de los regulares: hablé, habló).
Ayer fui al cine.
Yesterday I went to the cinema.
Fui = I went (ir). Context: al cine = destination → this is IR, not ser.
La fiesta fue muy divertida.
The party was very fun.
Fue = was (ser). Context: describing a characteristic → this is SER, not ir.
Fuimos a la playa el domingo.
We went to the beach on Sunday.
Fuimos = we went (ir). 'A la playa' = destination → IR.
