Доконаний і недоконаний вид
Ukrainian verbs come in aspect pairs: imperfective (недоконаний - process, habit, repetition) and perfective (доконаний - one completed result). The perfective has no present tense.
I can choose between imperfective and perfective verbs to say whether an action was a process/habit or a finished result.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Бабуся щонеділі варила борщ, а сьогодні вже зварила.
Grandma used to cook borshch every Sunday, and today she has already cooked it.
Я довго читав «Кобзар» Шевченка і нарешті прочитав його.
I read Shevchenko's "Kobzar" for a long time and finally finished it.
На Великдень ми малювали писанки цілий вечір.
At Easter we were painting pysanky (decorated eggs) the whole evening.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Майже кожне українське дієслово має видову пару: недоконаний вид (процес, звичка, повторення) і доконаний вид (одна завершена дія з результатом).

Недоконаний відповідає на що робив? — тривав процес: «Мама варила борщ цілий день». Доконаний — що зробив? — є результат: «Мама зварила борщ» (борщ готовий).
Увага: доконаний вид не має теперішнього часу. Форма «прочитаю» — це не теперішній, а майбутній час. Теперішній є тільки в недоконаного: «я читаю».
Common Error Patterns
Wrong aspect chosen (process vs. result) or a perfective used in the present.
Learn each verb as a pair (робити/зробити). Ask: process/habit -> imperfective; one finished result -> perfective. Remember the perfective has no present.
Бабуся щонеділі варила борщ, а сьогодні вже зварила.
Grandma used to cook borshch every Sunday, and today she has already cooked it.
варила (imperfective, habit) vs. зварила (perfective, result).
Я довго читав «Кобзар» Шевченка і нарешті прочитав його.
I read Shevchenko's "Kobzar" for a long time and finally finished it.
читав = the ongoing process; прочитав = brought it to completion.
На Великдень ми малювали писанки цілий вечір.
At Easter we were painting pysanky (decorated eggs) the whole evening.
малювали (imperfective) stresses the process over the whole evening.
