ו-andתחילית: וְ- לפני שם/פועל (וְאני, וְדוד)
אבלbutעומד בין שתי משמעויות מנוגדות
כיbecause / thatמסביר סיבה או מציין תוכן
ש-that / who / whichתחילית: שֶׁ- (שֶׁהוא, שֶׁהיא)
אוorבחירה בין שתי אפשרויות
גםalso / tooגם ... גם = both ... and

שים לב: ו- ו-ש- הן תחיליות — הן מצורפות ישירות למילה הבאה ללא רווח.

Writing ו as a separate word (ו דוד instead of וְדוד). Confusing כי (because/that) with ש- (that/who) — כי introduces reason or reported speech; ש- introduces relative clauses. Using או for 'and' (interference from English 'or' sounding like Hebrew או).

English speakers: ו- prefix attachment is unfamiliar. Ru/Cs speakers: а/но vs. אבל, потому что vs. כי are direct equivalents.

Common Error Patterns

Wrote ו- or ש- as a separate word with a space instead of attaching directly to the next word

Remember: ו- and ש- are always prefixes — write וְדוד, שֶׁהוא, never ו דוד or ש הוא

Used כי where ש- is needed or vice versa

כי = because/that (after verbs of saying/knowing for reported speech); ש- = that/who/which (relative clauses)

אני אוהב קפה ותה.

I like coffee and tea.

ו- prefix attaches directly to תה (tea): קפה ו+תה = קפה ותה. No space between ו and the next word.

אני עייף, אבל אני אלמד.

I am tired, but I will study.

אבל (but) is a free-standing word that introduces contrast. It is never a prefix.

הוא אמר שהוא בא.

He said that he is coming.

ש- prefix attaches to the next word (הוא): שֶׁ+הוא = שהוא. ש- introduces a relative or content clause.
