When I am tired, I drink coffee.
After I ate, I went for a walk.
Before I slept, I listened to music.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Common Error Patterns
Using אחרי or לפני without the subordinating שֶׁ, e.g. *אחרי אכלתי instead of אחרי שאכלתי.
Using present tense in both clauses when past sequence is needed, e.g. *
When I am tired, I drink coffee.
כְּשֶׁ- (when) introduces a simultaneous or habitual time clause. It attaches directly to the subject pronoun:
After I ate, I went for a walk.
אַחֲרֵי שֶׁ- (after) signals that the clause action happened first. Both verbs are in past tense (עָבָר): אָכַלְתִּי (I ate), יָצָאתִי (I went out).
Before I slept, I listened to music.
לִפְנֵי שֶׁ- (before) indicates the clause action is later in time. יָשַׁנְתִּי = I slept (past of ישן). שָׁמַעְתִּי = I heard/listened (past of שמע).
