של - שייכות
Expressing possession with של and contracted possessive pronouns
Can express possession using של and contracted forms שלי/שלך etc.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
זה הכלב שלי.
This is my dog.
הספר של המורה.
The teacher's book.
אתה יכול לקחת את הרכב שלנו.
You can take our car.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
של = of. משמשת לביטוי שייכות:
- הספר של דן = Dan's book (lit. the-book of Dan)
- הבית של המורה = the teacher's house
צורות מקוצרות עם כינויי גוף:
| עברית | אנגלית |
|---|---|
| שלי | my / mine |
| שלך (m.) | your / yours |
| שלך (f.) | your / yours (f.) |
| שלו | his |
| שלה | her / hers |
| שלנו | our / ours |
| שלכם/שלכן | your (pl.) |
| שלהם/שלהן | their |
שלך לזכר ולנקבה נשמע אותו דבר בדיבור, אך בכתיבה: שלך (m.) = שֶׁלְּךָ, שלך (f.) = שֶׁלָּךְ.
Forgetting ה on the possessed noun (הספר של, not ספר של when definite). Confusing male/female שלך in writing. Using English word order (Dan's book → *דן ספר instead of ספר של דן).
English speakers: Hebrew word order is noun first, then possessor — opposite of English 's. Ru/Cs speakers: no case inflection needed — של + noun is sufficient.
Common Error Patterns
Used English-style word order for possession (possessor before noun)
Hebrew possession: הספר של דן (the-book of Dan), not דן ספר. Noun comes first.
Omitted ה on the possessed noun when definiteness is required
When referring to a specific item, add ה to the possessed noun: הספר של דן (not ספר של דן)
זה הכלב שלי.
This is my dog.
שלי (my/mine) follows the noun: הכלב שלי = the-dog my. No gender change in שלי.
הספר של המורה.
The teacher's book.
של + noun/name for third-party possession. Both nouns can have ה: הספר של המורה.
אתה יכול לקחת את הרכב שלנו.
You can take our car.
שלנו (our) — contracted form of של + אנחנו. No gender agreement needed for the possessive pronoun.
