Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

אִם יִהְיֶה זְמַן, נֵלֵךְ לַיָּם.

If there is time, we will go to the sea.

אִם אַתָּה רוֹצֶה, אֲנִי יָכוֹל לַעֲזוֹר.

If you want, I can help.

אִם לָמַדְתָּ, תַּצְלִיחַ בַּמִּבְחָן.

If you studied, you will succeed in the test.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

משפטי תנאי בעברית מתחילים ב-אִם (if). הצורה הנפוצה: אִם + עתיד, עתיד (תנאי ריאלי).

דוגמה: אִם יֵרֵד גֶּשֶׁם, אֶשְׁאַר בַּבַּיִת (If it rains, I'll stay home).

עם עבר: אִם אָכַלְתָּ, אֲנִי שָׂמֵחַ (If you ate, I'm happy).

Common Error Patterns

Using inconsistent tenses in the if-clause and main clause

Omitting the conjunction אִם in conditional sentences

אִם יִהְיֶה זְמַן, נֵלֵךְ לַיָּם.

If there is time, we will go to the sea.

אִם + future (יִהְיֶה), then future (נֵלֵךְ). Real/likely condition. Both clauses use future tense.

אִם אַתָּה רוֹצֶה, אֲנִי יָכוֹל לַעֲזוֹר.

If you want, I can help.

אִם + present (רוֹצֶה), main clause present (יָכוֹל). Present+present used for general/habitual conditions.

אִם לָמַדְתָּ, תַּצְלִיחַ בַּמִּבְחָן.

If you studied, you will succeed in the test.

אִם + past (לָמַדְתָּ), main clause future (תַּצְלִיחַ). Past condition → future result is common.
