Das Verb 'essen'

Irregular conjugation of essen (to eat)

Mục tiêu học tập

Can talk about eating using the irregular verb essen

Kỹ năng thi cử:ViếtNói

Hãy xem các ví dụ sau. Bạn có nhận ra quy tắc ngữ pháp không?

Was isst du gern?

What do you like to eat?

Er isst jeden Tag Brot zum Frühstück.

He eats bread for breakfast every day.

Wir essen um zwölf Uhr zu Mittag.

We eat lunch at 12 o'clock.

Chú ý các phần được đánh dấu. Chúng có điểm gì chung?

Essen means "to eat", and it is one of the stem-changing verbs: in the du and er/sie/es forms, the e becomes i.

PersonFormPersonForm
ichessewiressen
duisstihresst
er/sie/esisstsie/Sieessen

Two forms to watch: du isst has no extra s, because the double s of the stem already supplies the sound of the ending (*du issst and *du esst are both wrong). And ihr esst keeps the e. Don't confuse er isst (he eats) with er ist (he is); they sound almost the same, so context decides.

Meals

GermanEnglish
frühstücken / das Frühstückto have breakfast / breakfast
zu Mittag essen / das Mittagessento have lunch / lunch
zu Abend essen / das Abendessen (das Abendbrot)to have dinner / dinner, supper

In many German homes the warm meal is at midday, and dinner is Abendbrot: bread, cheese, cold cuts and pickles. Wir essen um zwölf zu Mittag. Was gibt's heute zum Abendbrot? At lunchtime colleagues greet each other with Mahlzeit!, especially in offices and canteens.

Perfect tense

Essen forms its perfect with haben and an irregular participle: Ich habe Käsespätzle gegessen. The participle has a double ge: ge-gess-en.

Related words

Das Essen is "the food" or "the meal": Das Essen ist fertig! - Dinner's ready! Guten Appetit! is what you say before eating. And for animals German uses a different verb, fressen: Der Hund frisst. Using fressen for a person is rude, roughly "to stuff your face".

Bài tập thực hành
Learners say du esst instead of du isst, forgetting the stem change e → i. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English speakers may miss the stem change since English 'eat' doesn't change in present tense: 'du esst' instead of 'du isst'.

Was isst du gern?

What do you like to eat?

essen: du isst — stem change e → i.

Er isst jeden Tag Brot zum Frühstück.

He eats bread for breakfast every day.

er isst — same form as du isst (both use i).

Wir essen um zwölf Uhr zu Mittag.

We eat lunch at 12 o'clock.

Wir essen — no stem change in the wir-form.
