Když přijdeš domů, zavolej mi.

When you come home, call me.

Chci čaj, ale ne kávu.

I want tea, but not coffee.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Spojky spojují slova, věty nebo souvětí. Dělí se na souřadicí a podřadicí.

Souřadicí spojky (spojují rovnocenné věty):

SpojkaVýznamPříklad
aandMám psa a kočku.
alebutJe malý, ale silný.
neboorChceš čaj nebo kávu?
ani...anineither...norAni nejedl, ani nepil.
takžeso, thereforePrší, takže zůstaneme doma.

Podřadicí spojky (uvozují vedlejší věty):

SpojkaVýznamPříklad
protožebecauseZůstanu doma, protože prší.
kdyžwhen / ifKdyž přijdeš, zavolej.
žethatVím, že to umíš.
abyin order toUčím se, abych uměl česky.

Čárka: Před podřadicí spojkou se vždy píše čárka: Přijdu, protože chci. Před a se čárka nepíše.

Learners forget commas before subordinating conjunctions and confuse protože (because) with aby (in order to). 🇬🇧 English speakers: English comma rules differ. Czech requires a comma before every subordinating conjunction, which English doesn't always do.

Common Error Patterns

Missing comma before subordinating conjunction or incorrect comma with coordinating conjunction

Always place a comma before subordinating conjunctions (protože, když, že, aby). No comma before a/i (and).

Used wrong conjunction for the intended meaning (e.g., protože instead of aby)

Protože = because (reason). Aby = in order to (purpose). Když = when/if (time/condition). Že = that (content clause).

Zůstanu doma, protože prší.

I'll stay home because it's raining.

Protože (because) introduces a reason clause. Always preceded by a comma.

Když přijdeš domů, zavolej mi.

When you come home, call me.

Když (when/if) introduces a time or condition clause. Comma separates the clauses.

Chci čaj, ale ne kávu.

I want tea, but not coffee.

Ale (but) is a coordinating conjunction showing contrast.
