Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Vím, že knedlíky nejsou dietní, ale miluju je.

I know dumplings are not diet food, but I love them.

Učím se česky, abych si v Praze našel práci.

I am learning Czech in order to find a job in Prague.

Zeptej se, jestli mají ještě volné stoly, protože v pátek bývá plno.

Ask whether they still have free tables, because Fridays tend to be full.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Vedlejší věty uvozují spojky — před každou stojí čárka:

Aby se časuje: abych, abys, aby, abychom, abyste, aby + l-ové příčestí: Chci, abys přišel.

  • Missing comma: *Vím že → Vím, že
  • aby not conjugated: *Chci, aby ty přišel → abys přišel
  • aby + present tense: *abych přijdu → abych přišel (l-participle)

Common Error Patterns

Missing comma before the conjunction

Every subordinate clause is comma-separated

aby treated as invariable

abych/abys/aby/abychom/abyste + l-participle

Vím, že knedlíky nejsou dietní, ale miluju je.

I know dumplings are not diet food, but I love them.

že + comma; normal word order follows.

Učím se česky, abych si v Praze našel práci.

I am learning Czech in order to find a job in Prague.

abych + l-participle expresses my own purpose.

Zeptej se, jestli mají ještě volné stoly, protože v pátek bývá plno.

Ask whether they still have free tables, because Fridays tend to be full.

jestli = indirect question, protože = cause.
