Elipsa a parcelace v mluvené češtině
Understanding fast colloquial syntax: dropped verbs (Já nic!), echo answers, parceled afterthoughts and false starts
I can follow elliptical colloquial speech and answer yes/no questions the Czech way.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
— Dáš si ještě? — Dám. Ale malý.
— Will you have another? — I will. But a small one.
Já a lyžovat? To teda ne. Ani náhodou.
Me, skiing? Definitely not. No way.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Mluvená syntax škrtá a dodává:
| Jev | Příklad | Plně |
|---|---|---|
| elipsa slovesa | Já nic! Ty a vařit? | Já jsem nic neudělal… |
| echo odpověď | — Půjdeš? — Půjdu. | (ano se nahrazuje slovesem) |
| parcelace | Přijdu. Možná. V sobotu. | Možná přijdu v sobotu. |
| dodatek s teda | Dobrý, teda docela. | zmírnění dodatkem |
Čeština odpovídá na zjišťovací otázku slovesem, ne jen ano/ne: — Máš čas? — Mám.
- Answering only ano/ne — natives expect the echoed verb
- Parsing parceled fragments as errors — they are speech design
Common Error Patterns
Bare ano/ne instead of the verb
Echo the verb: Máš? — Mám.
— Dáš si ještě? — Dám. Ale malý.
— Will you have another? — I will. But a small one.
Echo verb + parceled afterthought.
Já a lyžovat? To teda ne. Ani náhodou.
Me, skiing? Definitely not. No way.
Verbless exclamation + stacked refusals.
