Future Tense

Future tense: stem + -ऊँगा/-एगा/-एँगे etc.

Can express future plans and intentions using the Hindi future tense with correct person/gender suffixes

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

मैं कल जाऊँगा।

I will go tomorrow.

वह आएगी।

She will come.

तुम क्या खाओगे?

What will you eat?

हम सब मिलकर काम करेंगे।

We will all work together.

भविष्य काल — Future Tense

Hindi future adds suffixes directly to the verb stem. Suffixes encode person + gender + number.

The suffix system encodes three things at once (person, gender, number), causing frequent confusion. 🇬🇧 English: English future 'will eat' is invariable. Hindi's 8+ suffix variants feel overwhelming. 🇩🇪 German: German uses werden + infinitive — no gender marking. Hindi's gender-marked future is entirely new.

मैं कल जाऊँगा।

I will go tomorrow.

Male speaker: stem जा + ऊँगा (1st person M).

वह आएगी।

She will come.

Female 3rd person: stem आ + एगी (3rd F).

तुम क्या खाओगे?

What will you eat?

तुम form (male): stem खा + ओगे.

हम सब मिलकर काम करेंगे।

We will all work together.

Plural: stem कर + एँगे (M.PL).
