भाषा-नीति

राजभाषा, त्रिभाषा सूत्र, हिंदी पट्टी

Lernziel

I can discuss Hindi's official position without misstating it

Prüfungskompetenzen:बोलनालिखना

Schau dir diese Beispiele an. Kannst du das grammatische Muster erkennen?

Hindi ist Amtssprache der Union.

Indien hat keine Nationalsprache.

Im Süden wird weniger Hindi gesprochen.

Achte auf die hervorgehobenen Teile. Was haben sie gemeinsam?

The constitutional position

Hindi in Devanagari is the राजभाषा, the official language of the Union, alongside English. It is not the national language; the Constitution names no national language, and saying otherwise is a common and consequential error.

The three-language formula

Schools are expected to teach three languages: the regional language, Hindi and English. Implementation varies by state, and several southern states have resisted compulsory Hindi since the 1960s.

The Hindi belt

हिंदी पट्टी refers to the northern states where Hindi and its related varieties dominate. The term is descriptive in linguistics and loaded in politics.

Why a learner should care

Asserting that Hindi is India's national language, or that everyone in India speaks it, will be corrected quickly and is a poor way to open a conversation.
